No platform turns yesterday's blockbusters into today's bargains faster than PlayStation. Games that launched at $60–$70 routinely sell under twenty within a couple of years — and many include a free PS5 upgrade from the PS4 disc, so a cheap copy still gets you the best version.

These are the best of them, ranked by value with live prices. Big PlayStation games are often cheapest as physical discs you can also resell, so several picks are disc editions. When a price is above the game's settled low, we'd wait — and below we explain exactly when PlayStation's deeper sales arrive.

What to skip

Skip · The full-price 'Director's Cut' or remaster

PlayStation loves to sell a full-price "remastered" or "director's cut" edition of a game whose original version is sitting right there for a fraction of the price. Unless the upgrade is genuinely transformative, it rarely justifies paying two or three times as much for the same game.

Most of these picks include a free PS5 upgrade from the PS4 disc anyway. Buy the cheap edition, take the free upgrade, and keep the difference.

Buy instead: God of War (2018).

How to spot a real PlayStation deal

Discs and the PS Store price the same game differently, and both quote a percentage off a high list price. The reliable trick on PlayStation is that most of these games have a settled "budget price" they return to again and again — God of War and Horizon in the PlayStation Hits range, GTA V perennially low. A real deal is at or below that settled floor; a "sale" still above it is just the store nudging you. Check the disc price against the PS Store digital price — physical frequently undercuts digital on older games — and buy whichever is lower.

When PlayStation games go cheapest

PlayStation's biggest first-party sale is Days of Play, which lands in the late-spring to early-summer window each year; after that, Black Friday through the holidays brings the deepest PS Store cuts, with a smaller new-year sale too, and weekly deals rotating in between. Weigh PS Plus as well: its monthly games and Extra or Premium catalog can make a game effectively free if you already subscribe, which sometimes beats buying it outright. If a big event is near, wait; otherwise these games sit near their floor most of the year anyway. More on the timing in when games go on sale.
