No platform turns yesterday's blockbusters into today's bargains faster than PlayStation. Games that launched at $60–$70 routinely sell under twenty within a couple of years — and many include a free PS5 upgrade from the PS4 disc.
These are the best of them: genuine AAA epics for the price of a couple of coffees, ranked by value with live prices. Note that big PlayStation games are often cheapest as physical discs (which you can also resell), so several picks here are disc editions. And yes, there's a skip pick at the end.
Almost everything on this page is a PS4 disc, which on a PS5 with a drive is an advantage rather than a compromise — the compatibility rules, the limitations Sony publishes and the upgrade catches are all in do PS4 games work on PS5.
The free PS5 upgrade trick
Most first-party PS4 games — including God of War, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Zero Dawn — offer a free upgrade to the PS5 version if you own the PS4 disc. That means you can buy the cheap PS4 edition and still play the enhanced PS5 version for nothing. Don't pay extra for a "PS5 edition" unless the discount makes it genuinely cheaper.
Disc vs digital on PlayStation
Physical discs frequently undercut the PlayStation Store's digital price on older games, and you can trade or lend them. Digital wins during PS Store sales and if you have a discless console. Most of this shelf is last-generation, which raises a fair question if you do not already own the hardware. Is a PS4 still worth it answers it honestly, including what Sony has quietly changed about PS Plus on that console.
