Old horror is not compromised horror
This is the central point. Fear is built out of pacing, sound and restraint — none of which improves with a newer engine. Alien: Isolation came out over a decade ago and still has the most convincing stalking AI in games. Buying old here is not settling; it is arbitrage.
Know which kind of scared you want
The genre splits three ways, and the split matters more than the price. Resident Evil 4is action horror — you are armed, and the game is a thrill ride. Resident Evil 7and Alien: Isolation are survival and stealth horror — you are outmatched and mostly hiding. Until Dawn is an interactive slasher film you play with friends in the room.
