The best cheap horror games, ranked for value

A white PlayStation controller in low light — best cheap horror games

Horror is the genre budget buyers should raid first. A great scare does not decay — a decade-old horror game is exactly as frightening today as it was at launch, because tension, sound design and what you cannot see do not age the way graphics do. The result is a genre where all-time classics routinely sell for around twenty dollars while their remakes ask for seventy.

Every pick below is a complete, finished game, ranked by value-per-dollar with a live, date-stamped Amazon price. All five are PlayStation discs that also play on PS5, which is where the cheap horror back catalog actually lives — we have not padded the list with versions we cannot verify a price for. For the wider price tiers, see the best games under $25 and the best PlayStation games under $20.

The honest part

What to skip

Skip · The full-price remake of a game you can buy for twenty dollars

Horror is the most remade genre in gaming, and those remakes are the worst value on the shelf for a budget buyer. The same story, the same scares and often the same level layouts sell for three times the price of the original disc — which is still sitting there, still excellent, still frightening.

There are honest reasons to want the newer version: modern controls, a real visual overhaul, a friend who wants to watch the pretty one. Just be clear that is what you are paying for. If the goal is to be scared for the least money, the originals above do that job completely.

Buy instead: Resident Evil 4 at around twenty dollars.

How to buy horror cheaply without buying badly

Old horror is not compromised horror

This is the central point. Fear is built out of pacing, sound and restraint — none of which improves with a newer engine. Alien: Isolation came out over a decade ago and still has the most convincing stalking AI in games. Buying old here is not settling; it is arbitrage.

Know which kind of scared you want

The genre splits three ways, and the split matters more than the price. Resident Evil 4is action horror — you are armed, and the game is a thrill ride. Resident Evil 7and Alien: Isolation are survival and stealth horror — you are outmatched and mostly hiding. Until Dawn is an interactive slasher film you play with friends in the room. Buying the wrong one is how people decide they do not like horror.

Discs are usually cheaper than downloads here

Older horror is one of the clearest cases for buying physical. Store versions of decade-old horror games often sit at a stubborn digital price, while the same game on disc trades near the bottom of its market — and you keep the option to resell it once you have been scared. The trade-offs are in physical vs digital games.

October is the sale window

Every storefront runs a Halloween horror sale, and it is the one reliably genre-specific discount event of the year. If you are reading this in late summer, wishlist now and buy in October; if you are reading it in October, that is the price. The rest of the calendar is in when do games go on sale.

How we picked

We don't test games in a lab

Most "best cheap games" lists just re-rank the same store page. We don't, and we won't pretend to run a test lab we don't have. What we do: compile the real current and historical-low prices, the actual playtime and replay data, and the sale cycle — then do the value math and tell you what to skip. The full method is on how we pick. Everything here is checkable.

Questions

Frequently asked

01What is the best cheap horror game?
Resident Evil 4on value — sixteen to twenty hours of the best-paced action horror ever made, for around twenty dollars. If you want to be properly frightened rather than thrilled, Resident Evil 7 is the scarier buy at a similar price.
02Are these the remakes or the originals?
The originals, and that is deliberate — it is where the value is. Resident Evil 4 here is the original 2005 game's PS4 release rather than the 2023 remake, and Until Dawn is the PS4 version rather than the newer remake. Each card names exactly which version you are buying so there is no confusion at checkout.
03Do PS4 horror games work on a PS5?
Yes. PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 discs, which is why the cheap horror back catalog is worth raiding even on current hardware. You do need the disc-drive version of the console to use physical copies — a digital-edition PS5 cannot read discs.
04Which cheap horror game is best to play with friends?
Until Dawn, comfortably. One person holds the controller, everyone argues about the choices, and the cast lives or dies on what the group decides. For non-horror group games, see cheap games to play with friends.
