The best cheap stealth games

Stealth is the genre that aged best on the budget shelf: the games built around hiding still play exactly as they did, and almost none of them costs more than a takeaway.

PlayStation game cases on a shelf - the best cheap stealth games

Buy the Ezio Collection. It is the best cheap stealth purchase on the shelf because it is three finished stealth games in one box — Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations — from the era when the series was built around rooftops, crowds and patience rather than loot and levels. If you want the purest version of the genre instead, where there is no combat worth having and hiding is the entire game, buy Alien: Isolation. Everything else on this page is a variation on those two answers.

Stealth is unusually kind to a budget buyer, and it is worth understanding why before you spend anything. A stealth game's value lives in its level design and its enemy routines, and neither of those degrades. A 2014 stealth game plays in 2026 exactly as it played the week it shipped, because nothing about sneaking past a guard depends on rendering technology. Compare that with a competitive shooter, where the game you bought is only as good as the number of people still playing it. That difference is the whole reason this genre is a bargain: the thing you are buying was never the graphics.

What this page ranks on

Three things, applied in this order, and the ranking follows them rather than a general sense of quality.

Does the game actually reward hiding? This sounds obvious and it is the test most "stealth" lists fail. A game where stealth is one optional approach is not a stealth game, it is an action game with a crouch button. The honest signal is what happens when you are spotted: in a real stealth game being seen is a failure that costs you something, and in an action game it is just the fight starting a few seconds early.

How much finished game is in the box?Our top pick wins partly on contents. PlayStation lists the Ezio Collection as three games plus single-player add-on content — and explicitly not the original multiplayer modes, which were shut off years ago. Three campaigns for one budget price beats one campaign for the same money, and the same arithmetic drives best cheap game collections.

Is the cheap version the whole version? This is where stealth gets awkward, because the genre loves a Gold Edition. Metro Exodus is the clean example: PlayStation lists the standard game, a Gold Edition and a Metro Saga Bundle as three separate products at three separate prices. We rank the standard disc, because it is a complete game, and we say so on the card rather than letting you find out later. What does definitive edition mean decodes the rest of that vocabulary.

One warning before the picks: this genre has a label problem

The biggest stealth franchise in gaming stopped making stealth games, and the store page never mentions it. The modern Assassin's Creed titles — Odyssey, Valhalla, Shadows — are open-world action RPGs with levels, gear scores and enemies who can be literally too high-level to assassinate. They are good games and several of them are cheap, which is why we rank them on best cheap Assassin's Creed games. They are not what you are looking for if you searched for a stealth game, and buying one by mistake is the most common way to waste money in this genre. That is also our skip pick below, and it is a verdict about fit, not quality.

Every pick on this page is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB. That is not an accident of our selection — stealth is a genre about killing people quietly, and the cheap catalog reflects it. If you are shopping for a younger player the right pages are cheap games for kids and best cheap LEGO games, and what do ESRB ratings mean explains how to read the label on any box.

9.5/10
Value

Three full Assassin's Creed games in one budget box — Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations, plus their single-player add-on content and two short films. Nothing else in the series comes close on game-per-dollar.

Pros

  • PlayStation's own listing names all three games plus "the acclaimed single-player campaigns and single-player add-on content" and the Lineage and Embers short films
  • Assassin's Creed II is the game that defined the series, and this is the cheapest legitimate way to own it on a modern console
  • Entirely offline — three complete campaigns you own outright, with nothing to expire

Cons

  • Rated M (17+) by the ESRB for Blood, Intense Violence, Sexual Content and Strong Language
  • The original multiplayer modes are explicitly NOT included — PlayStation lists the collection as single-player only
  • These are 2009-2011 games with 2016-era remaster work; the controls feel their age next to the newer picks here
  • Amazon stock on this disc is thin, so the listing can go dark without warning

Don't buy this if…

…you want the modern RPG-style Assassin's Creed — this is the older, stealthier, more linear design.

Value

The cheapest pick here and the only one with co-op: revolutionary Paris, built at a density no other game in the series has matched, with four-player online heist missions. A famously broken launch that was patched years ago.

Pros

  • PlayStation lists up to 4 online players in co-op, and online play is optional — no other pick on this page offers that
  • Paris in 1789 at full scale, with the storming of the Bastille and the execution of Louis XVI as set pieces
  • The cheapest way into the series, and the crowd technology still has no real equal

Cons

  • Rated M (17+) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Alcohol and Game Experience May Change During Online Play
  • Its launch reputation is deserved history; buy it knowing the co-op population in 2026 is small
  • Co-op needs PS Plus, a Ubisoft account and a PlayStation Network account on top of the disc
  • The story is the thinnest in the series — the city carries this one, not the plot

Don't buy this if…

…you are buying it mainly for the co-op — the mode works, but finding strangers in it this long after launch is luck.

Cons

  • Single-player only — there is no co-op or multiplayer at all
  • Stealth can be fiddly, and the survival systems demand patience

The honest part

What to skip

Skip · Assassin's Creed Odyssey, as a stealth purchase

This is not a quality verdict — Odyssey is enormous, it is cheap, and we have a whole page saying it is worth it if you will actually play it. It is the wrong purchase if what you wanted was a stealth game, and the store page gives you no way to know that.

Odyssey is an open-world RPG with a level system. Enemies scale, your damage is a number on a piece of gear, and the signature move of the series — walk up behind someone and end the fight before it starts — simply does not work on a target several levels above you. Stealth is the weakest of its three pillars, which is the same thing we say on its own review page. Buy it for the exploring and the scale, not the sneaking.

If you want the series at its stealthiest for the same kind of money, the Ezio Collection is the answer, and it is three games instead of one.

Buy instead: Assassin's Creed The Ezio Collection.

How to buy a cheap stealth game without regretting it

Read the player count, not the marketing

PlayStation lists Alien: Isolation and Metro Exodus as 1 player, and Unity as 1 player plus up to four online players. That one line tells you more about a stealth game than any trailer. A single-player listing means the designers controlled every guard, every patrol route and every sightline, which is exactly what the genre needs. Where a stealth game advertises co-op, the stealth is usually the part that got compromised to make the co-op work.

Check whether the cheap listing is the Gold Edition or the standard one

Three of the five games here have more than one edition on sale at once. PlayStation lists Metro Exodus as a standard game, a Gold Edition and a Metro Saga Bundle; Alien: Isolation has a separate THE COLLECTION listing at $39.99 alongside the base game at $29.99 list. Neither extra edition is required and both cost more than the thing most people want. Buy the base game, finish it, and decide about expansions afterwards — the argument in full is in what is a season pass.

Old stealth games are not compromised purchases

Alien: Isolation and Unity both released in 2014; the Ezio Collection repackages games from 2009 to 2011. In most genres those dates would be a warning. Here they are closer to a recommendation, because the thing that makes a stealth game work — a guard who walks a route you can learn — is a design problem that was solved a long time ago. The two newest games on this page, Metro Exodus and Far Cry 5, are the two where stealth is optional rather than central. That is not a coincidence; it is where the genre went.

Where the shooters end and the stealth begins

Metro Exodus and Far Cry 5 sit at the bottom of this ranking on purpose. Both are excellent and both let you play almost the whole game quietly — PlayStation's own description of Metro Exodus calls it a shooter that "blends deadly combat and stealth" — but in both of them loud is a legitimate strategy rather than a mistake. If you want them judged as shooters instead, that is best cheap shooters. If what you want is a game that punishes you for being seen, stay in the top three.

When to buy

Every game on this page is old enough to have been through several sale cycles, which means none of them is ever far from its floor. There is no urgency here and no reason to pay a "deal" price above what the game hit three months ago; check it against how to track game prices first. If a seasonal event is close, the calendar in when do games go on salewill tell you whether waiting a fortnight is worth it. On this shelf it usually is not — these prices move in pennies now, not dollars.

How we picked

We don't test games in a lab

Most "best cheap games" lists just re-rank the same store page. We don't, and we won't pretend to run a test lab we don't have. What we do: compile the real current and historical-low prices, the actual playtime and replay data, and the sale cycle — then do the value math and tell you what to skip. The full method is on how we pick. Everything here is checkable.

Questions

Frequently asked

01What is the best cheap stealth game?
Assassin's Creed The Ezio Collection, because it is three complete stealth-era games in one budget box — Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations — from the period when the series was built around crowds, rooftops and patience. If you want pure stealth with no combat fallback at all, Alien: Isolation is the better answer and is usually even cheaper.
02Are the new Assassin's Creed games stealth games?
Not really. Odyssey, Valhalla and Shadows are open-world action RPGs with level systems, where an enemy can be too high-level for an assassination to kill outright. They are worth buying on their own terms — see best cheap Assassin's Creed games — but if you searched for "stealth game" they are not what you meant, which is why Odyssey is this page's skip pick.
03Is Alien: Isolation actually a stealth game?
Yes, more than anything else on this list. PlayStation's own description calls it "a survival horror set in an atmosphere of constant dread", and the design backs that up: the alien cannot be beaten in a fight, so hiding is not a tactic, it is the whole game. It is also the scariest thing on this page by a distance, which is why it also appears on cheap horror games.
04Do old stealth games still hold up?
Better than almost any other genre. A stealth game's value is in its level layouts and guard routines, and those do not age the way graphics or online player counts do. The three oldest picks here are the three with the most dedicated stealth design, which tells you something about where the genre has drifted.
05Are these games suitable for younger players?
No. Every pick on this page carries an ESRB Mature 17+ rating, and the content descriptors PlayStation lists include intense violence and strong language on most of them. For a younger player start at cheap games for kids or best cheap LEGO games instead, and read what do ESRB ratings mean for how to check any box yourself.
06Should I buy the Gold Edition of Metro Exodus?
Not first. PlayStation lists the standard game, a Gold Edition and a Metro Saga Bundle as three separate products, and the standard game is a complete, finished campaign. Buy that, play it, and only then decide whether you want the expansions — the reasoning is the same one in what is a season pass.
