Skip · Waiting for first-party Nintendo games to go on sale

The one Switch deal that never comes is a cheap first-party Nintendo game. Mario Kart, Zelda and Smash hold their price for years — a "sale" on them is a few dollars off, if that. Building a budget Switch library around waiting for a big first-party discount means waiting more or less forever.

The good news is that the third-party and indie catalog on Switch is spectacular and genuinely cheap. Build from picks like the ones above instead of holding out for a discount that isn't coming.

How to tell a real Switch deal from a big percentage

The eShop shows discounts as a percentage off a list price, and that list price is frequently the launch MSRP the game hasn't actually sold at in years. A "70% off" badge on an inflated base can still be more than the game's normal sale price. Ignore the percentage and look at the dollar figure: have you seen this game lower before? The live price on each pick here is an easy second number to sanity-check the eShop against. If both sit near the usual low, it's a real deal; if the eShop is "on sale" for more than the game routinely costs, skip it and wait.

When Switch games are actually cheapest

Nintendo barely discounts its own catalog, but third-party and indie publishers cut prices hard and often. The deepest eShop sales cluster around a few predictable windows — a big spring sale, a large summer sale, Black Friday into Cyber Monday, and a new-year and holiday sale — with publisher-specific sales rotating constantly in between, so the game you want is rarely far from a discount. If a major seasonal event is close, wishlist and wait; if it isn't and the price is already at its usual low, buy.
