The best games under $20, ranked for value

Not a re-ranked store page. These are genuine all-time greats that sell for under twenty dollars, ranked by how much game you get per dollar — with one honest pick to skip.

A game controller with coins — best games under $20

"Best games under $20" is the most-searched budget query in gaming, and almost every result is a re-ranked store page: uniformly positive, no prices, no reason to trust the order. This one is different. Every game here is a genuine all-time great that reliably sells under twenty dollars, and the order is set by value-per-dollar — how much game you actually get for the money.

That's why a $15 farming sim can outrank a $19 AAA blockbuster: you're buying value, not just quality. Prices are live from Amazon and date-stamped; where we don't have a verified price, we say "Check price" rather than print a number that has gone stale. And unlike every competitor, we finish with a pick to skip.

The honest part

What to skip

Skip · Full-price new releases

The one thing that never belongs on an under-$20 list is a brand-new full-price release. Every non-Nintendo game on this page launched at $40–$70 and is now a fraction of that — because third-party games always get cheap on a schedule. Buying the hot new game at launch is the single most expensive habit in gaming.

Unless you genuinely need to play something the week it comes out, wait one sale cycle. The exact same money buys you a stone-cold classic here instead of a third of a new game you'll finish and shelve.

Buy instead: Any pick on this list.

How to get the most out of $20

Twenty dollars is a sweet spot. It's enough to buy a genuine classic, but small enough that you should never waste it on filler. Three rules make it go further:

1. Buy hours, not hype

A $15 game you play for eighty hours is astonishing value; a $19 game you finish in three is not. Every pick here is chosen because the hours-per-dollar are high — whether that's a hundred-hour RPG like The Witcher 3 or an endlessly replayable one like Stardew Valley.

2. Match the game to your time, not just your budget

If you have twenty hours a week, a bottomless RPG is perfect. If you have twenty minutes at a time, a pick-up-and-play game is better value even at the same price. We label the rough playtime on every pick so you can tell.

3. Time it against the sale calendar

Several of these drop even lower during seasonal sales. If a big event is close, waiting can turn a $20 buy into a $10 one. Check when games go on sale and the Steam sale schedulebefore you buy — or buy now if the price is already at its usual low.

How we picked

We don't test games in a lab

Most "best cheap games" lists just re-rank the same store page. We don't, and we won't pretend to run a test lab we don't have. What we do: compile the real current and historical-low prices, the actual playtime and replay data, and the sale cycle — then do the value math and tell you what to skip. The full method is on how we pick. Everything here is checkable.

Questions

Frequently asked

01Are these games really under $20?
They reliably sell under $20, and the live price on each pick shows the current Amazon price. Prices move, so a game may occasionally sit a dollar or two above — if it's over, it's usually worth waiting for the next sale, which we link to.
02What is the single best value game under $20?
Stardew Valley— hundreds of potential hours for around fifteen dollars is unmatched. For a big cinematic game, The Witcher 3 Complete Edition is the value champion.
03Digital or physical for these?
It varies. Switch and PC greats are usually cheapest as digital codes; big PlayStation games are often cheapest as physical discs you can also resell. See physical vs digital games.
