Twenty dollars gets you a lot; thirty gets you almost everything. This is the tier where the biggest single-player games ever made — hundred-hour RPGs, prestige open worlds, the deepest co-op campaigns — all come into range, because the games that launched at full price have had time to fall. The order here is value-per-dollar, not just quality: how much genuinely great game you get for the money.

The trap in this tier is the shiny new indie or AA game that launches at thirty dollars. It looks like it belongs here — it's under $30, after all — but a brand-new game at its launch price is almost never the best use of thirty dollars. Third-party games follow a schedule: a first cut a few months in, then steeper ones at each seasonal sale.

The same money on this page buys a stone-cold classic with the discount already baked in. Unless you specifically want to play something the week it launches, put the thirty dollars toward a proven pick here and grab the new game later, cheaper.

The extra ten dollars over the under-$20 tier isn't about buying a newer game — it's about buying a bigger one. Here is what we weighed on every pick.

Hours per dollar, at scale

At this price the question is no longer "is it good?" but "is it enormous and good?" A hundred-hour RPG like The Witcher 3 at this price is one of the best values in the medium; a tight ten-hour game is harder to justify at thirty than at ten. We favor the games where the sheer amount of quality content is absurd for the money.

Yesterday's $70 game, today's bargain

The reason this tier is so strong is the discount curve. Games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of Warlaunched at full price and now sell for a fraction of it — the exact same game, minus the launch tax. On PlayStation, a PS4 disc often unlocks a free PS5 upgrade too, so a cheap old disc becomes a current-gen game.

Spend up for depth, not newness
