Open worlds are the single worst genre to buy at full price. They're the biggest, most expensive games made, they launch buggiest, and they fall furthest, fastest. The hyped new open world at seventy dollars will be a third of that within a year — and it'll run better after a year of patches, too.

Every world on this page launched at full price and now sells for a fraction of it, fully patched. Buy one of these to get lost in now, and grab the new one when it's cheap and fixed.

What makes an open world worth it cheap

A big map is easy; a big map worth exploring is not. Here's what separated the picks.

A world worth the walk

The worst open worlds are wide and empty — a map of icons and busywork. The best fill the space with things worth finding. The side content in The Witcher 3 or the sheer density of Red Dead Redemption 2 is the point; a bigger map with less in it is worse value, not better.

The launch tax is gone

These are the exact same games that sold for full price at launch, minus the launch tax and plus a couple of years of patches. On PlayStation, a cheap PS4 disc frequently unlocks a free PS5 upgrade — a current-gen open world for last-gen-bargain money.

Sandbox worlds never run out

Two kinds of open world live here. Story-driven ones — Witcher, Red Dead, Horizon, God of War — give you a huge crafted adventure. Sandbox ones like Terraria and Minecraft hand you the tools and get out of the way. For pure hours-per-dollar, the sandboxes are almost impossible to beat.

Budget your time, not just your money

Open worlds are a time commitment as much as a purchase. A sixty-hour epic is a bad buy if you play twenty minutes a week; a drop-in sandbox is better value for the same money. We note the rough scale on every pick so you can match it to the time you have.
