The RPG is the genre where waiting pays off most, which makes the full-price launch the worst value on the shelf. A brand-new $70 open-world or live-service RPG will be a third of that price within a year — and if it's live-service, the "free" content usually arrives wrapped in a cash shop and a season pass.

A cheap RPG can still be a bad buy if it's a bloated eighty hours of busywork. Here is what we weighed.

Hours that are actually good

Length is the RPG's headline stat and its biggest trap. We care about goodhours: the best-in-class side quests of The Witcher 3 are worth more than double the padded map-clearing of a lesser game. Every pick here is chosen because the time you put in is time well spent, not filler stretching a number.

Systems you can sink into

The best RPGs give you a sandbox of builds and choices.
