The trap in this tier is the shiny new AA or indie game that launches around twenty-five dollars. It looks like it belongs — it is under $25, after all — but a brand-new game at its launch price is almost never the best use of the money. Third-party games follow a schedule: a first cut a few months in, then steeper ones at each seasonal sale.

The same $25 buys a proven, discounted classic here, with the launch tax already gone. Unless you specifically want to play something the week it launches, put the money toward a pick on this list and grab the new game later, cheaper.

Depth you cannot get cheaper
