The best cheap Resident Evil games — and which one to start with

Three budget Resident Evil discs, three completely different kinds of horror game, and a naming system designed to make you buy the wrong one. Here is which to start with and what each actually contains.

Game discs and cases on a dark desk — the best cheap Resident Evil games ranked for value

Start with Resident Evil 4— the 2005 original, not the remake — if you want the most game for the least money: a 16–20 hour campaign at the cheapest price on this page. If you want to be genuinely frightened rather than entertained, start with Resident Evil 7 biohazard: Gold Edition instead. And if you want the series at its most modern and polished, that is Resident Evil 2, the 2019 remake.

Those are three different recommendations because Resident Evil is not one kind of game. It is at least three, and the numbering actively hides which one you are buying. The series runs from fixed-camera survival horror, to third-person action with a stock of ammunition, to first-person haunted-house horror — and because Capcom remakes its own back catalogue, a single number like "4" can refer to two separate games released eighteen years apart at wildly different prices.

That is what this page sorts out. We are not ranking which Resident Evil is best; the internet has that argument covered. We are ranking which budget disc gives you the most finished horror game for the money, and saying plainly which kind of horror each one is, so the twenty dollars you spend buys the experience you actually wanted. Every pick was confirmed in stock with a live price through our retail partner before we wrote about it, and every claim about contents, players or ratings comes from PlayStation's own game page for that disc.

All three picks are PlayStation discs that play on a PS4 or a PS5 with a drive, and all three are rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB — there is no Teen-rated entry in this series at any price. If you are shopping for a younger player this is the wrong page; try cheap games for kids. For horror across publishers rather than inside one series, see best cheap horror games.

The honest part

What to skip

Skip · The Resident Evil 4 remake (2023), if what you want is Resident Evil 4 cheaply

The 2023 remake is an excellent game and it is not in this page's price bracket, nor anywhere close to it. That matters because the two games share a name exactly, and a store search for "Resident Evil 4" returns both. The disc we rank at number one is the original, which PlayStation itself lists as "resident evil 4 (2005)" with this PS4 release dated August 29, 2016.

So this is a skip in one specific sense: do not pay remake money assuming it is the only way to play Resident Evil 4. The 2005 game is the one that invented the over-the-shoulder template every modern action-horror game still uses, it runs on PS4 and PS5 hardware, and its listed playtime is 16–20 hours — the longest campaign on this page by some distance. For a first purchase in this series, it is more game per dollar than anything else here.

Buy the remake later, deliberately, when it reaches a budget price — which it will, on the same curve we document in when do games go on sale. What you should not do is buy it by accident because two listings share a title. Checking exactly what you are holding is the whole skill, and it is the subject of how to spot a fake game discount.

Buy instead: Resident Evil 4 (2005).

How to buy a cheap Resident Evil game

Decide which of the three Resident Evils you want, because they are different genres

Everything else is downstream of this. Resident Evil 4is third-person action horror: you are armed, competent and constantly short of bullets, and the pace never really drops. It is the longest game here at a listed 16–20 hours and the one most likely to be enjoyed by someone who does not consider themselves a horror player at all.

Resident Evil 7is first-person, claustrophobic and genuinely unpleasant in the way the genre is supposed to be — a listed 9–12 hours, and the shortest route to being actually scared. Resident Evil 2is the 2019 remake of a 1998 game: a tight police-station crawl with two separate campaigns, which is why its playtime reads as 8–10 hours twice over rather than a single long run.

The Gold Edition is the one to buy, and only one pick here is a Gold Edition

Resident Evil 7 appears on this page in its Gold Edition, which is the version that bundles the extra episodes rather than leaving them as separate purchases. PlayStation lists the Gold Edition separately from the standard game, exactly as it lists a Deluxe Edition separately from the standard Resident Evil 2.

The practical rule for this series is the same as the one in what does definitive edition mean: when the loaded edition and the standard edition sit in the same price bracket, buy the loaded one, and when the loaded edition costs materially more for cosmetic extras, buy the standard disc. Check the live prices on the cards above; they move, and the right answer moves with them.

Resident Evil 7 has a VR mode you probably should not pay for

PlayStation lists Resident Evil 7 as PS VR headset enabled with PS Camera optional, and states that the VR features require a PS VR headset and a PlayStation Camera, with a separate warning that PlayStation VR is not for use by children under age 12. It is one of the most talked-about VR experiences on the platform.

It is also not a reason to buy hardware. A headset plus camera costs multiples of every disc on this page combined, which makes it the opposite of a budget purchase. The flat-screen game is complete on its own — PlayStation lists the title as offline play only, 1 player, PS4 Pro Enhanced. Buy the disc, play it on your television, and treat VR as something you try if a friend already owns the kit. The general principle is in gaming gear for beginners.

Check the year in brackets before you check the price

This series has more name collisions than any other on the site. There is a 2005 Resident Evil 4 and a 2023 Resident Evil 4. There is a 1998 Resident Evil 2 and a 2019 Resident Evil 2. Store search results do not reliably distinguish them, and the price gap between an original and its remake is routinely three or four times.

PlayStation's own listings are the tiebreaker, and they are blunt about it: the game we rank first appears as "resident evil 4 (2005)". Before you buy any disc in this series, match the release year and the platform to what you meant to buy. That is the entire content of the skip pick below, and the reason it is a skip rather than a recommendation.

These discs have mostly stopped falling

Unlike the current-gen shelf in best cheap PS5 games, these three have found their floor. A 2016 or 2017 disc at a back-catalog price is not going to halve again, and what moves it from here is remaining stock rather than promotion — which moves in one direction only. If the one you want is in stock inside your bracket, buy it.

The one time to wait is October, when horror gets promoted on every storefront at once; those windows are in the game sale calendar. For the head-to-heads between individual entries, we have Resident Evil 2 vs Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 2 vs Resident Evil 7.

How we picked

We don't test games in a lab

Most "best cheap games" lists just re-rank the same store page. We don't, and we won't pretend to run a test lab we don't have. What we do: compile the real current and historical-low prices, the actual playtime and replay data, and the sale cycle — then do the value math and tell you what to skip. The full method is on how we pick. Everything here is checkable.

Questions

Frequently asked

01Which Resident Evil game should I start with?
Resident Evil 4 (2005) if you want the most game for the money — it is the cheapest pick here and the longest, at a listed 16–20 hours, and its action-led design is the easiest entry point for someone who does not normally play horror. Start with Resident Evil 2 instead if you want the modern remake style, or Resident Evil 7 if you specifically want to be frightened. You do not need to play the series in order.
02What is the cheapest Resident Evil game?
Of the three we can verify in stock with a live price, Resident Evil 4 (2005) is consistently the cheapest, and it is also the longest — which is why it ranks first on a value-per-dollar list rather than merely a cheap one. The live prices on the cards above are date-stamped; they move, so check them rather than trusting any ranking.
03Is the Resident Evil 4 remake different from the original?
Yes — they are two separate games released eighteen years apart, and both are sold under the name Resident Evil 4. PlayStation lists the one on this page as "resident evil 4 (2005)", with the PS4 release dated August 29, 2016. The 2023 remake rebuilds the same story with modern controls and is not in this page's price bracket. If you want Resident Evil 4 cheaply, the 2005 game is the answer; see the skip pick for why this specific confusion costs people money.
04Do you need PlayStation VR to play Resident Evil 7?
No. PlayStation lists Resident Evil 7 as PS VR headset enabled with PS Camera optional, which means VR is a supported mode, not a requirement — the listing describes the game itself as offline play only, 1 player, PS4 Pro Enhanced. PlayStation does state that the VR features require a PS VR headset and PlayStation Camera, and that PS VR is not for use by children under 12. Buying a headset to play one budget disc is not a budget purchase.
05Are cheap Resident Evil games still worth buying in 2026?
Yes, and more so than most back catalogs, because horror ages well — these are designed experiences with fixed endings rather than live services that can be switched off. All three picks here are single-player, which PlayStation confirms on each listing, so nothing about them expires. The comparison with games that do expire is in best cheap sports games.
