The best cheap PS5 games, ranked for value

PS5 software is where the discounts run deepest, because a $69.99 launch price has a long way to fall. These are the current-gen discs we can verify in stock at a budget price, ranked on how much finished game is inside.

A PS5 console and DualSense controller beside a stack of game cases — the best cheap PS5 games ranked for value

The best cheap PS5 game right now is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and it is the pick for anyone who wants the most finished game for the least money on current-gen hardware: a 2024 release with two full cities in it, Honolulu and Kamurocho, now sitting in the same bracket as a ten-year-old PS4 disc. If you want the newest thing on the shelf instead, that is Assassin's Creed Shadows, which PlayStation still lists at $69.99 for the standard edition.

PS5 software is the best place on this site to be a patient buyer, and the reason is arithmetic rather than taste. A current-gen game launches at $69.99. A PS4 game from 2015 launched at $59.99 and finished falling years ago. The newer, more expensive game therefore has further to drop, drops faster, and lands in the same twenty-dollar bracket as the old one inside about eighteen months — which is why eight of the nine discs below are from the last four years and one of them is from last year.

One warning before the list, because it decides whether this page is useful to you at all. Every pick here is a disc. PlayStation's own support page is explicit that "PS4 game discs can't be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition", and the same hardware fact applies to PS5 discs. If your console has no drive, nothing on this page works and the honest route for you is the digital store at sale time — see physical vs digital PS5 games and how to buy PS5 games cheap.

One pick is deliberately not a PS5 disc. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimateis the PS4 release, and it is here because it plays on a PS5 with a drive and bundles more content than anything else in the bracket — 37 fighters, plus both Kombat Packs and the Aftermath expansion. That is the whole trick to buying cheap on a PS5: the console plays two generations of discs, so your real shortlist is twice as long as the store page suggests. The mechanics, and the limitations, are in do PS4 games work on PS5.

Value

A 2024 turn-based RPG that launched at full price and is now the cheapest game on this page. Two protagonists, Honolulu and Kamurocho, and an absurd number of side activities — Sujimon, Dondoko Island, karaoke, golf, arcades.

Pros

  • Turn-based combat that lets you position and combo, plus a whole second game's worth of minigames
  • Two leads — Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu — and a story that swings from farce to genuinely moving
  • Launched in January 2024 at full price; a native PS5 disc now sits in the budget bracket

Cons

  • A direct sequel — it assumes you have played Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and the returning cast carries a lot of history
  • Rated M (17+) for intense violence, sexual themes and strong language
  • Enormous; the side content can swallow the main story if you let it

Don't buy this if…

…you have never played a Like a Dragon game — start with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, or the story beats here will land on nothing.

Pros

  • A 2023 release at a back-catalog price — by far the newest game on this page
  • CI Games' Master of Fate update (April 2024) was free to all owners and, in the publisher's words, the culmination of over 30 updates, adding seven optional modifiers you can use to make a run harder or stranger
  • Supports up to 3 online players with PS Plus, with drop-in co-op through the whole campaign

Cons

  • Rated M (17+) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Partial Nudity, Strong Language and Violence
  • Launched rough — the performance and balance it ships with today is the product of those 30-plus patches, and the early reputation is deserved
  • Enemy density is still high by genre standards even after the post-launch reductions
  • PS5 only — there is no PS4 version of this disc

Team Ninja's souls game wearing a Final Fantasy costume: a full job system bolted onto Nioh-grade combat. The RPG player's way into the genre, and the one most likely to click if loadouts and classes are what you enjoy.

Pros

  • Job-based skill trees and a deep class system — PlayStation's page builds its feature list around them
  • Combat comes from the Nioh team, so it is far better than the game's reputation suggests
  • Supports up to 3 online players with PS Plus

Cons

  • Rated M (17+) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes and Violence
  • The season-pass expansions (Trials of the Dragon King and the two that followed) are separate purchases, not on this disc
  • The story and dialogue are divisive on purpose, and the first few hours are the hardest to take seriously
  • Loot and menu management are heavy even by Team Ninja standards

  • Still the current mainline Mortal Kombat, so the online side is alive

Cons

Pros

  • Feudal Japan with two genuinely different protagonists — Naoe the shinobi for stealth, Yasuke the samurai for open combat — and you switch between them
  • The only current-gen-only pick here: built for PS5 with PS5 Pro enhancements, not a last-gen game running in compatibility
  • PlayStation lists the standard edition at $69.99, so the disc price is the clearest discount on this page

Cons

The honest part

What to skip

Skip · Metaphor: ReFantazio on disc, at what it currently costs

This is not a quality verdict — Metaphor is one of the best-reviewed role-playing games of its generation and we rank it as a buy on best cheap JRPGs. The problem is what it costs next to the disc at the top of this page. Metaphor and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are both enormous turn-based Japanese role-playing games, both from 2024, both PS5 discs, both listed by PlayStation at the same $69.99 standard price when they were new. Check the live prices on the cards above: one has fallen to roughly a quarter of that and the other has not.

That gap says nothing about which game is better. It says which print run is still being discounted. Awards keep a disc price propped up; a crowded release window pushes one down. If you have played neither, buying the cheaper one first costs you nothing in quality and saves you a second game's worth of money — the exact arithmetic we walk through in how to spot a fake game discount.

Buy Metaphor when it reaches the bracket its shelf-mates are already in. The windows worth waiting for are in the game sale calendar, and the seasonal pattern for exactly this kind of award-winner is in when do games go on sale.

Buy instead: Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

How to buy cheap PS5 games

Check the PS4 disc of the same game before you buy the PS5 one

This is the first thing to do and almost nobody does it. A PS5 with a disc drive plays PS4 discs, so for any cross-generation game there are two prices to compare, and the last-gen plastic is nearly always cheaper. PlayStation also documents an upgrade path: "Certain PlayStation®4 games can be upgraded to the digital PlayStation®5 version of the game on a PS5® console."

Read the catch, because it is a real one. When you upgrade from a disc, PlayStation states that "you need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game" — the disc becomes a key. And a game you received as a PS Plus benefit is not eligible for the upgrade unless PlayStation says otherwise. Neither is a dealbreaker; both are things to know before you pay. The full comparison is in do PS4 games work on PS5.

The newest game on the shelf is often cheaper than the two-year-old one

Assassin's Creed Shadowscame out on March 20, 2025 and PlayStation still lists the standard edition at $69.99. Its disc is in this page's bracket. The skip pick, meanwhile, is a 2024 game that is not. Age does not set a disc price — remaining stock and publisher discounting do, and those two forces regularly invert the order you would expect.

So compare the live prices on the cards above rather than assuming the older game is the cheaper one. It is the same finding we reached across an entire franchise in best cheap Assassin's Creed games, where a 2020 disc was listing above a 2025 one.

Prefer the discs that cannot be switched off

Seven of these nine picks are complete single-player or local-multiplayer games that work with the internet unplugged. Two lean on online services: Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1, which PlayStation lists as supporting 2 players locally and up to 8 online with PS Plus, with online play optional and PS Plus required for online play.

"Optional" is the word that matters on a budget. Both games have real single-player content — Street Fighter 6 has the World Tour mode, Mortal Kombat 1 has a story campaign — so neither is a dead box if you never subscribe. But if the online half is why you want the game, add the running cost of PS Plus to the price on the card first. Games whose entire value proposition can expire are the subject of best cheap sports games.

Watch the edition suffix, especially on the fighters

One pick here is the loaded edition of its own game, and that is exactly why it earns its place. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate bundles the base game with Kombat Pack 1, Kombat Pack 2 and the Aftermath expansion, per the Xbox store listing for that edition. Meanwhile PlayStation lists a separate Definitive Editionof Mortal Kombat 1 and a Khaos Reigns expansion as additional purchases — so the standard disc on this page is the base game.

Neither fact makes a pick better or worse; both change what you get for the price on the card. We unpack every suffix on the shelf in what does definitive edition mean, and rank the multi-game boxes specifically in best cheap game collections.

Read the rating, because this list skews adult

Six of these nine are rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB. The exceptions are LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 and Street Fighter 6, which the ESRB rates Teen on Mild Blood, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, Violence, In-Game Purchases and Users Interact. If you are buying for a younger player, start at cheap games for kids or best cheap LEGO games instead; for gifting generally, gifts for PlayStation owners states the rating on every pick.

Current-gen discs still reward waiting, unlike last-gen ones

Most of the back catalog on this site has found its floor: a 2014 disc is not going to halve again. PS5 software is the opposite. Everything on this page is young enough to still be travelling down its curve, which means a seasonal sale genuinely moves the number you pay rather than shaving a dollar off it.

Practically: if a pick here is already inside your bracket, buy it; if it is close, the windows worth waiting for are in when do games go on sale, Black Friday game deals and Prime Day game deals. For the same shelf cut by price cap instead of console generation, see best PlayStation games under $30.

How we picked

We don't test games in a lab

Most "best cheap games" lists just re-rank the same store page. We don't, and we won't pretend to run a test lab we don't have. What we do: compile the real current and historical-low prices, the actual playtime and replay data, and the sale cycle — then do the value math and tell you what to skip. The full method is on how we pick. Everything here is checkable.

Questions

Frequently asked

01What is the best cheap PS5 game?
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, on value-per-dollar. It is a 2024 PS5 release that PlayStation listed at $69.99 when new and it has fallen further from that price than anything else on this page, while containing two full cities and a complete turn-based campaign. If you want the newest game rather than the biggest one, buy Assassin's Creed Shadows.
02Are PS5 games cheaper than PS4 games?
No — but they fall faster. On any given day the PS4 disc of a cross-generation game is the cheaper of the two, because last-gen plastic always is. The thing worth knowing is that a PS5 game launches at $69.99 and reaches the twenty-dollar bracket in roughly eighteen months, where a PS4 game launched at $59.99 and finished falling years ago. So the patient PS5 buyer pays less per game across a year. The maths is in the cheapest way to play new games.
03Do PS5 game discs work on a PS5 Digital Edition?
No. The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, and PlayStation's support page states plainly that "PS4 game discs can't be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition"— the same is true of PS5 discs. Every pick on this page is physical, so if you own a Digital Edition this is the wrong page for you; use how to buy PS5 games cheap, which is about the digital store's sale cycle instead.
04Can I play PS4 games on my PS5 to save money?
Yes, if your PS5 has a disc drive, and it is the single biggest money-saver available to a PS5 owner. PlayStation says many PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, with the caveat that "some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles" and that some PS4 games may show errors or unexpected behavior. In practice it doubles your shortlist and halves your prices. See do PS4 games work on PS5 for the limitations list and the upgrade rules.
05Is it worth buying a PS5 game at launch?
Almost never, on this site's maths. A $69.99 launch price is the highest number that game will ever carry, and the pattern on this page is that eighteen months takes a current-gen disc to roughly a third of it — Assassin's Creed Shadows is the live example. The real exceptions are games you will play with friends in the first month and competitive games where the population matters on day one.
