The best gifts for PlayStation owners (PS5 & PS4)

PlayStation is the console of the big boxed blockbuster — and most of the best ones now cost less than a takeaway. These are the discs and the card that land with PS5 and PS4 owners, ranked for gift-fit, priced live, with the two checks (disc drive, age rating) that decide whether it works.

A PlayStation controller — best gifts for PlayStation owners

PlayStation is the platform where the big, cinematic, boxed blockbuster lives — and because those games launch at full price and then fall hard, most of the best ones now sit in the budget bracket. That makes it the easiest console to buy an impressive-looking gift for. It also has two traps: the PS5 Digital Edition can't play discs, and a lot of the best PlayStation games are rated M. This page is built around both.

The picks are ranked for gift-fit — how likely they are to land with someone whose taste you don't fully know — with the site's value score alongside. Every one is a product this site already recommends; the specs, pros, cons and the "don't buy this if" line are unchanged. Prices are live and date-stamped. For the wider budget library, see the best PlayStation games under $20; for a spending cap, see gifts under $30 or gifts under $50.

Action-adventure8–12 hrs1 playerPhysical
8.8/10
Value

Spider-Man needs no introduction, the game is rated T rather than M, and it's short enough that anyone finishes it. The one boxed PlayStation game you can give almost blind.

  • Why it lands: Universal appeal, a free PS5 upgrade on the disc, and the best web-swinging in games. It's the blockbuster that clears the age-rating hurdle most PlayStation epics fail.
  • Who it suits: Teens and adults on a PS4 or PS5. A casual player will finish it; a serious one will still enjoy it.
  • Check before buying: That their console has a disc drive (the PS5 Digital Edition doesn't). Physical PS4 disc; free PS5 upgrade.

Pros

  • Sensational traversal
  • Focused, satisfying length
  • Free PS5 upgrade

Cons

  • Shorter than the first Spider-Man
  • Combat repeats late on

Don't buy this if…

you want a giant 40-hour game — this is a tight, high-quality blockbuster, not an epic.

A landmark action epic in the budget PlayStation Hits range. Twenty-plus hours of top-tier AAA in a box that reads as a serious gift, for around twenty dollars.

  • Why it lands: It's one of the most acclaimed games on the platform and it looks like a much more expensive present than it is.
  • Who it suits: Adults who like cinematic, story-driven action. Rated M by the ESRB — not one for kids.
  • Check before buying: The age rating, whether they've already played it (it's popular), and that they have a disc drive.

  • One long, seamless camera shot
  • Budget-priced now

Cons

  • Fairly linear
  • A slow first couple of hours

Value

All nine Star Wars films as one LEGO game, playable by a parent and a child together. The PS5 disc that a whole household can open and start on the same afternoon.

  • Two-player drop-in couch co-op, so a parent and a child can share a sofa

Cons

  • Two players at most — no four-player mode

Street Fighter 6

FightingWorld Tour story mode1–2 local + onlinePhysical
9.4/10
Value

The current entry in the most famous fighting series, with a real single-player story mode and a control scheme that lets newcomers play. A PS5 disc for two people on one sofa.

  • Why it lands: Fighting games are the classic 'play it together on the day' gift, and this one doesn't lock beginners out.
  • Who it suits: Teens and adults on a PS5 who play with friends, online or on the couch.
  • Check before buying: That it's a PS5 with a disc drive — this is the PS5 edition. New fighters are sold separately, so the box is the base game.

Pros

  • World Tour is a full create-a-character single-player campaign, not a five-fight arcade ladder
  • Three control types — Classic, Modern and Dynamic — so beginners are not locked out of the game
  • Still the current entry in its series, which is where the online players are

Cons

  • New fighters are sold in yearly passes on top of the base game
  • Ranked play and the Battle Hub need a PlayStation Plus subscription

The honest part

What to skip

Skip · A boxed game for a PS5 Digital Edition

Sony sells two kinds of PS5, and one of them — the Digital Edition — has no disc drive at all. Every physical game on this page is useless to it. It's the single most common way a PlayStation gift fails, and it's invisible from the outside unless you know to look for the slot.

If you can't confirm which model they own, don't buy a disc. The PlayStation Store card works on both, and it lets them pick up any of the games above digitally.

Buy instead: PlayStation Store Gift Card.

Check one: does their PS5 have a disc drive?

A standard PS5 has a slot on the front for discs; the Digital Edition doesn't. Every boxed game here is a disc. If you can see the console, look for the slot; if you can't, ask — or give the PlayStation Store card, which works on both. PS4 owners are simpler: every PS4 has a drive, and every disc on this page plays on a PS4 as well as a PS5.

Check two: the age rating

Three of the picks on this page sit at the mature end of the shelf: God of War, The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are rated M by the ESRB for violence, language and adult themes. For a teenager, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Zero Dawn are rated T; for a child, LEGO Star Wars is rated E10+. The rating is printed on every box and every store listing.

Why the boxed PlayStation game is such a good gift

Two reasons. First, the discount curve: PlayStation's biggest exclusives launch at full price, then drop into the budget "PlayStation Hits" range or its equivalent, so a gift that looks like a seventy-dollar game often costs twenty. Second, a disc can be lent, resold or exchanged if it turns out they own it — a digital code can't. Our guide to physical vs digital PS5 games covers the trade-offs; when do games go on sale? explains the curve.

Timing: Sony's Black Friday window

PlayStation's own Black Friday promotion in 2025 opened on November 21 and covered games, hardware, accessories and PlayStation Plus memberships. Physical back-catalog games like the ones here are already near their floor, so there's little reason to wait on them — but a controller, a headset or a PS Plus membership is worth holding for the window. We track it on the Black Friday & Cyber Monday tracker; the rest of the year is on the PlayStation Store sale schedule.

How we picked

We don't test games in a lab

Most "best cheap games" lists just re-rank the same store page. We don't, and we won't pretend to run a test lab we don't have. What we do: compile the real current and historical-low prices, the actual playtime and replay data, and the sale cycle — then do the value math and tell you what to skip. The full method is on how we pick. Everything here is checkable.

Questions

Frequently asked

01What's the best gift for someone with a PS5?
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales — universal appeal, rated T, short enough to finish, with a free PS5 upgrade on the disc. If you can't confirm they have a disc drive, give the PlayStation Store card instead.
02Will a PS4 game work on a PS5?
Yes — a PS5 with a disc drive plays PS4 discs, and several picks here (Spider-Man, The Witcher 3) include a free PS5 upgrade. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive and can't play any disc.
03How do I know if their PS5 is the Digital Edition?
Look at the front of the console: a standard PS5 has a horizontal disc slot; the Digital Edition has none. If you can't see it, ask, or buy a PlayStation Store gift card, which works on either.
04Which of these PlayStation games are OK for a teenager?
Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Zero Dawn and Street Fighter 6 are rated T; LEGO Star Wars is E10+. God of War, The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are rated M. Check the ESRB rating on the box before you buy.
