Steam Winter Sale dates: when the December sale lands

The Steam Winter Sale is the biggest and broadest discount event of the gaming year, and if you only buy PC games twice a year, this is one of the two times to do it. Valve does not announce the dates in advance — nobody outside Valve knows them — but the window has barely moved in a decade.

The historical pattern: the Winter Sale opens in the third week of December, usually a few days before Christmas, and runs into the first days of January. That is roughly two weeks, straddling the holidays. Any page giving you an exact 2026 date before Valve has said so is guessing, and we will not print a fake date to look authoritative.

What the Winter Sale actually is

A sitewide event: effectively the whole Steam catalog discounts at once, and a large share of games hit their lowest price of the year. Unlike the shorter autumn event, the Winter Sale is long enough to think, and broad enough that almost anything on your wishlist will be included.

• Length: roughly two weeks, from the third week of December into early January.
• Depth: the deepest sitewide cuts of the year, alongside the Summer Sale.
• Timing within the day: Steam sales have consistently started and ended at 10am Pacific time, so the final day is really a final morning.
• Price stability: prices are set at the start and hold for the whole event. There are no flash or daily deals to wait for.

Winter Sale vs Autumn Sale: which to buy in

These used to be less than a month apart, which confused people every year. They are not any more: Valve moved the Autumn Sale out of Thanksgiving week in 2025 and it now runs in early October for about a week, while the Winter Sale still lands in mid-December and runs about two and a half weeks. That leaves roughly ten weeks between them. In practice the discounts are similar on most games, so the honest guidance is:

1. If a game you want is deeply discounted in the Autumn Sale, buy it. Waiting a month to save nothing is a bad trade, and the autumn window is short.
2. If it is only lightly discounted in November, wait for December. The Winter Sale is broader and more likely to hit the real floor price.

Every other store discounts in the same window

December is not a Steam phenomenon. The eShop runs a holiday sale, the PlayStation Store runs its own December event, and Xbox does the same, all overlapping the same fortnight. If you buy across platforms, this is the one time of year when a single evening of shopping can cover everything.

How to prepare before December

The people who spend well in the Winter Sale are the ones who decided what they wanted in November. The sale is enormous, and browsing it cold is how you end up with four games you never install.

• Wishlist through the year. Steam sorts your wishlist by discount during a sale, which turns two weeks of chaos into one useful page.
• Write down a budget before it starts. A sitewide sale is designed to make small purchases feel free. They add up exactly like full-price ones.
• Note each game's floor price. Then you can tell instantly whether a December price is genuinely the best it has ever been.
