Normally, the offline game keeps working and the online game stops permanently. EA puts it about as plainly as a publisher can: when it retired the online servers for NHL 14 through NHL 18 it wrote that "After this date, you'll still be able to play all offline modes on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One," and when ONRUSH was shut down it said "For ONRUSH fans who want to continue playing, offline modes will continue to be available." That is the normal shape of a shutdown: the disc still plays, the parts of it that needed a server do not.
It matters here because this is a site about buying games cheap, and the cheapest games on any shelf are last year's online games. A sports title at a steep discount is cheap precisely because it is a year from retirement, and if you do not know which half of the game you are buying, that discount can be a trap rather than a bargain.
What usually survives, and what does not
Survives: single-player campaigns, offline modes, local multiplayer on one console, and anything that does not need to talk to a server. This covers most of what a budget buyer actually plays.
Stops:matchmaking and online play, online leagues and seasons, leaderboards, anything cloud-saved on the publisher's own service, and in-game stores. Live-service currencies and unlock tracks go with them.
It depends:content you downloaded. Already-installed add-ons usually keep working; re-downloading them years later, after a game is delisted, is where people run into trouble. That is one more reason the complete-edition box on a shelf beats a base game plus a pile of separate purchases — see what is a season pass.
Which cheap games are most exposed
Annual sports games. This is the only genre where the publisher publishes an expiry date in advance, which is honest of them and useful to you. 2K maintains a public server-sunset schedule for the NBA 2K series, and EA maintains an online services shutdown list covering its catalog, including every NHL title — NHL 22 and NHL 23 are listed on it for August 31, 2026. Our best cheap sports gamespage carries each pick's published date for exactly this reason.
Fighting games with online-only modes. The core game — arcade mode, story, local versus — is offline and durable. The ranked ladder is not. A fighting game bought cheap years later is still an excellent purchase if you have someone to play with on the sofa, which is the main thing we say on best cheap fighting games.
Older games with bolted-on multiplayer.Plenty of single-player games from the last decade shipped with a multiplayer mode nobody remembers, and those servers went quietly years ago. PlayStation's listing for the Assassin's Creed Ezio Collection makes the point for us: the collection includes single-player add-on content and explicitly not the original multiplayer. You are not losing anything you were going to use.
Live-service games. The genuine casualties. When the servers go, there is often no game left at all, because the game was the service. This site does not recommend them, and that is the reason.
How to buy an online game cheaply without losing the purchase
Ask which half you are buying
Before you buy any discounted game with an online component, answer one question: if the servers went off tomorrow, would I still want this? For a sports sim bought to play franchise mode against the computer, the answer is usually yes. For the same game bought to play online leagues with friends, the answer is no, and the discount is not a discount.
Look up the published date, because it often exists
2K publishes an NBA 2K server-sunset schedule and EA publishes an online services shutdown list. Those are the two biggest annual publishers and both tell you in advance. Spend two minutes on the official page before buying any sports title more than a year old; our sports roundup carries the dates we found, but the publisher pages are the authority and they move.
Prefer the complete edition, and prefer offline content
Our top pick below is the clean example: Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is a box that bundles the base game with its expansions, so the content is on the disc rather than contingent on a store that may close. The general principle is in best cheap game collections and what does definitive edition mean.
A shutdown is not a refund event
Publishers give notice and they keep offline modes running where they can, but retiring an online service is not treated as a failure to deliver. You will not get money back. Price the risk into what you pay instead: a game whose online half expires next year is worth roughly what the offline half is worth to you, and no more.
The safest cheap purchases of all
Single-player games with no online component cannot be switched off. That is a real and underrated feature, and it is why so much of this site is pointed at them — best cheap single-player games, cheap horror games and cheap stealth games are three shelves where this question never comes up. If you are buying something to keep, buy from those.
